PET/CT scanner cost does not automatically include installation. Some quotes are equipment-only. Others may include deinstallation, rigging, crating, freight, delivery, installation support, applications help, testing coordination, service coverage, or parts planning. Before comparing PET/CT prices, ask exactly what is included and what is excluded. A lower equipment number can become the higher project cost if installation, logistics, room readiness, service, or acceptance support were never priced.
Start With the Quote Scope
A PET/CT quote should say whether it covers the machine, the move, the install, the support plan, or all of the above. If it does not, the buyer is left guessing.
At the equipment level, the quote should identify the manufacturer, model, CT slice count, PET detector generation, software/options, included workstations, accessories, known condition, and whether the system is used, tested, refurbished, or sold as-is. Those words matter. “Used” may mean limited support. “Refurbished” should mean inspected, repaired where needed, prepared for transport and installation, documented, and scoped for support.
At the project level, the quote should identify who is responsible for each handoff: deinstallation, rigging, crating, freight, storage, delivery, installation, calibration, acceptance support, applications help, and service coverage.
If the quote only says “PET/CT scanner,” treat it as incomplete until the scope is clear.
What Installation May Include
Installation can mean different things depending on the seller. In a narrow quote, installation may only mean placing the scanner and supporting basic startup. In a broader project quote, it may include installation labor, system setup, cable and cabinet placement, workstation setup, network coordination, scanner checks, calibration support, applications coordination, and turnover to the facility team.
PET/CT is more complicated than a simple equipment swap because it combines PET-side and CT-side risks. Site Work Is Usually Separate
Many PET/CT surprises are not scanner problems. They are site problems.
The room may need review for power, HVAC or cooling stability, floor loading, access, shielding, control-room layout, network connectivity, PACS/RIS routing, hot lab workflow, radiopharmacy coordination, patient flow, and service access. Which items apply depends on the exact system, facility, room, local requirements, and professionals responsible for design and radiation-safety review.
Do not assume the scanner vendor’s installation quote includes construction, electrical upgrades, shielding work, hot lab buildout, HVAC modifications, network cabling, flooring, permits, physics services, or state/local registration work. Those items are often handled by separate qualified teams.
That does not mean the equipment vendor should ignore them. A good PET/CT partner should help identify equipment-side requirements early so the room team is not working blind. But identifying a requirement is not the same as owning every piece of site work.
Before signing, ask for a simple responsibility map: what MIS or the seller owns, what the facility owns, what the construction team owns, what the physicist owns, what IT owns, and what the service team owns.
Logistics Can Change the Real Cost
PET/CT logistics can be a major part of the project cost. A scanner still installed in another facility has to be removed without damage, rigged safely, protected for transport, shipped, insured, received, and moved into the new room.
Those steps are not automatically included. A seller may quote “as-is, where-is,” leaving the buyer responsible for removal and freight. Another vendor may include deinstallation coordination, rigging, crating, freight planning, storage, delivery, and installation support.
Ask whether the quote includes:
- Deinstallation at the source site
- Rigging and loading
- Crating or transport protection
- Freight, insurance, and storage
- Delivery to dock or final room
- Inside delivery and final placement
- Installation labor and startup support
- Applications support and handoff
Equipment-only can make sense for a buyer with strong project management and trusted logistics partners. For many facilities, the cleaner answer is a scoped project with fewer gaps between seller, mover, installer, and service provider.
Service and Parts Should Be Priced Early
Installation gets the PET/CT into the room. Service keeps it useful after go-live.
Before buying, ask how preventive maintenance will be handled, who responds to downtime, what parts are available, what the service area is, and what is excluded. PET/CT support can involve detector modules, CT tube and generator components, cooling parts, gantry electronics, acquisition computers, workstations, tables, power components, and software support.
The CT tube alone can change the risk profile. A scanner with a weak tube position, limited service history, or poor parts path can look attractive on purchase price and still become expensive once the schedule fills.

- Is the quote equipment-only, installed, or turnkey?
- Is the system used, tested, refurbished, or as-is?
- Are workstations, software/options, accessories, and documentation included?
- Who owns deinstallation, rigging, freight, storage, and delivery?
- Who owns installation, startup, applications help, and acceptance support?
- What site work is excluded?
- What service plan, parts path, and response expectations are included?
- What assumptions could change the final cost?
If the quote does not answer those questions, ask for clarification before approval. A responsible vendor should be willing to write down the scope.
What to Send MIS Before Requesting a PET/CT Quote
To price the project correctly, send MIS the preferred manufacturer or model family, CT slice-count need, clinical use case, expected volume, facility location, timeline, site status, whether the room is existing or new, service expectations, logistics constraints, and budget context. If replacing a scanner, include current system details, deinstall timing, and known issues.
Do not send patient names, dates of birth, accession numbers, reports, images, schedules, labels, or screenshots containing PHI. For equipment quoting, redact anything that does not belong in the project file.
